About Sollbol
What is Sollbol?
Sollbol is a net-free paddle sport played singles or doubles on a portable 12' x 30' court you can set up in minutes. It’s designed for competitive, strategy-driven rallies that you can play almost anywhere.
How is Sollbol different from pickleball, padel, or tennis?
Sollbol is different in three core ways:
- No net - Faster setup and fewer location constraints
- Portable full court -the court comes with you
- Strategy-first rules -upward-arc shots and line-target scoring create a unique tactical game
Who is Sollbol for?
Sollbol is designed for a wide range of players—beginners through advanced athletes. It’s quick to learn and rewarding to master through strategy, placement, and control.
Can kids and families play?
Yes. Families love Sollbol because it’s easy to learn and works for mixed skill levels. Adult supervision is recommended during setup and play, especially when using stakes.
How the Game Works
How do you start a point?
Each point begins with a controlled opening exchange, and the ball becomes “in play” after the third touch.
What does “ball is in play after the third touch” mean?
The point has a
short “friendly” start phase to establish the rally. After the third touch, standard scoring rules apply and points can be won or lost.
Shot Rules (No Spikes)
Are spikes allowed?
No. Spikes are not allowed in Sollbol.
What is a spike in Sollbol?
A spike is any downward movement of the ball that lacks an upward arc after contact.
What does “upward arc” mean?
After contact, the ball must travel with a trajectory that rises (even slightly) rather than being driven downward. This rule shifts the game toward control, strategy, and placement.
Why does Sollbol ban spikes?
The no-spike rule increases rally strategy and keeps the game accessible while still being intensely competitive. It rewards finesse, positioning, and shot-making rather than only power.
What happens if a player spikes the ball?
Spiking or hitting the ball downward results in a strike, and the point is replayed.
- First strike: A friendly warning
- Second strike and beyond: The opposing team earns 1 point for each additional strike
If a hit’s legality is unclear, replay the point and keep the game moving.
Sollbol is built around flow, strategy, and long rallies — when in doubt, replay the point and keep it fun.
Court Setup Tips
Are there any tips on setting up the court?
- Keep one end of each boundary line staked in the ground when winding or unwinding.
- In soft or deep sand, clear and flatten the surface before inserting stakes for a more secure hold.
- On windy days:
-Keep the reel low to the ground when winding or unwinding to prevent boundary lines from twisting or catching wind.
- Lightly toss small amounts of sand over the black ribbons to help keep lines in place.

Boundary Lines
How do Sollbol boundary lines work?
Sollbol’s court uses a unique ribbon-based boundary system designed for real-world play.
Boundary lines are measured from the outer edge of one ribbon, across the gap, to the outer edge of the opposite ribbon. If the ball lands anywhere within that area - on either ribbon or in the gap - it counts as landing on the line.
The court includes five total lines:
- Two sidelines
- Two baselines forming the perimeter
- One mid-court line extending from the outside edge of sideline to sideline
Are boundary lines “in”?
Yes. Boundary lines are active scoring targets. Landing the ball on your opponent’s boundary line is worth 2 points.
What happens if the ball lands on the mid-court line?
The mid-court line is a fault. If the ball lands on the mid-court line, your opponent scores 1 point.
Official Scoring
How do you score points in Sollbol?
Sollbol uses a simple scoring system that rewards accuracy and precision:
- 1 point when you land the ball inbounds
- 1 point to your opponent if you land the ball out of bounds
- 1 point to your opponent if the ball lands on the mid-court line (mid-court line is a fault)
- 2 points when you land the ball on your opponent’s side or rear boundary lines
Can you give examples of scoring?
Yes:
- Ball lands clearly inside the opponent’s side: you score 1 point
- Ball lands outside the court boundary: opponent scores 1 point
- Ball lands on the mid-court line: opponent scores 1 point
- Ball lands on the opponent’s side or rear boundary lines: you score 2 points
Why is the boundary line worth 2 points?
It encourages precision and strategy. The line becomes a high-value target that rewards control and shot placement.
Players and Formats
Is Sollbol singles or doubles?
Both. You can play:
- Singles (1 vs 1)
- Doubles (2 vs 2)
How long is a typical game?
It depends on the format and rally length.
What score do you play to?
Games are played to 11, 15, or 21 points and must be won by at least two.
What does “win by 2” mean?
To win, a player/team must lead by 2 points at the end of the game (e.g., 11–9 wins; 11–10 continues).
Care, Durability, and Storage
Is Sollbol built to last?
Yes. The set is engineered for repeated play and travel. With normal use and basic care, it’s designed to be a long-term game system.
How do I clean it after play?
After use, remove any sand or grit from all components, wipe everything down, and allow all parts to fully dry before storage.
If the boundary lines become very wet, remove them from the reel and let them dry completely before reeling them back in for the next use.
How should I store the set?
Store the full kit dry in the carry bag. Whether in use or not in use, avoid prolonged exposure to extreme heat or storage in enclosed, unventilated spaces.
How should I protect the paddles during storage?
Protect paddles during storage by placing them in the pouches located inside the drawstring backpack.
Can the boundary lines stay outside?
Yes, temporarily - but they are not weatherproof. For best longevity, store them indoors and keep the lines wound on the reel. If wet, unfurl the lines and allow them to dry completely before reeling them back in.
Can the reel or balls be left in the sun?
Avoid leaving the reel or balls outdoors for long periods or in non-ventilated spaces. Excessive heat or direct sunlight can cause warping. Store all components in a cool, dry, ventilated space.
